AGIAMONDO is the personnel service of the German Catholics for Development Cooperation. In the Civil Peace Service (CPS) we offer development workers a meaningful role working with local development agents. The CPS is a personnel programme for peace-building and the prevention of violence in crisis and conflict regions. It sets out to promote a world in which conflicts are settled without violence. Working with church-related and civil-social partner organisations in Guatamala, AGIAMONDO aims to make a contribution towards civil conflict management and the sustainable and equitable development of the country through peace-building measures.

To support the remembrance work of the Monseñor Girardi Centre of the Human Rights Office of the Catholic Archdiocese of Guatemala (ODHAG), we are looking for an

Educator, museum education officer (m/f/d), Guatemala City, Guatemala

to start as soon as possible.

Your new role

More than 20 years after the signing of a peace agreement, the effects of decades of civil war are still omnipresent in Guatemala. Many of those responsible for crimes against humanity are still in decision-making positions. Civil society agents who are committed to dealing with the past, observing human rights and increasing social justice often work in an exposed position and face increasing political pressure.

In this environment, the Monseñor Girardi Memorial Centre of the Archdiocese of Guatemala is sending an important signal with its courageous work. On the one hand it documents the life and work of Bishop Girardi, and on the other it prepares documents about Guatemala’s violent past for further human rights and remembrance work and makes them accessible to a broad public. In this way, the centre supports a constructive culture of remembrance and contributes to social reconciliation.

Working with the partner organisation, you will develop new educational approaches and concepts that are specifically aimed at younger generations, encouraging them to deal with history in a responsible manner and to accept the responsibility that comes with it. Through your work at the Monseñor Girardi Centre you will contribute directly to peace-building and the strengthening of social justice in Guatemala.

Specifically, you will carry out the following tasks:

  • You will support the team at the Monseñor Girardi Centre of the Human Rights Office of the Archdiocese of Guatemala (ODHAG) in the conceptual redesign of its remembrance work. In doing so, you will help the employees to intensify the use of the centre and to attract more visitors, especially teenagers and young adults.
  • You will support the team in applying museum didactic methods and assist the centre in developing new educational materials.
  • You will contribute to modernising and strengthening public relations work, for example by redesigning the website and increasing the use of social media.
  • Working with your colleagues, you will develop approaches to stop people forgetting the past and you will encourage the next generation to learn lessons from history and to take responsibility for the future.
  • You will be responsible for the proper spending and management of funds locally in accordance with the donor and AGIAMONDO guidelines. In doing so, you will work in partnership with ODHAC.

Your profile

  • You have a university degree in education, adult education or a related field of study, ideally with additional training in museum education/museum didactics. You are familiar with the basics of extracurricular political education and remembrance work.
  • Ideally, you have gained relevant professional experience in post-conflict contexts, preferably in Latin America.
  • You have many years of experience developing didactic concepts and handle the creation of appropriate educational materials with confidence and creativity. You are just as familiar with traditional exhibition formats as with websites.
  • You have experience in the creation and maintenance of websites and social media channels for educational work. You are used to presenting complex topics in an appealing digital format.
  • You have excellent written and verbal Spanish skills.
  • You are an EU or Swiss citizen, you can act appropriately in a church environment and you identify with and support the goals and concerns of church development and peace-building work with a strong sense of conviction.

  • Three-year contract, social security and remuneration in accordance with the German Development Aid Workers Act (Entwicklungshelfergesetz)
