The Association for Development Cooperation (AGEH) is the human resources service of German Catholics for Development Cooperation. In the Civil Peace Service (CPS) we offer development workers a meaningful role working with local development agents. The CPS is a staffing programme for peace-building and the prevention of violence in crisis and conflict regions. It works to help create a world, in which conflicts are resolved without violence. Together with church and civil society partners in the Central African Republic, AGEH aims to make a contribution to civil conflict transformation through peace-building measures.

In order to support the establishment of Justitia-et-Pax commissions at parish level and to accompany their peace work, we are currently seeking a

Project Manager for Conflict Transformation, Berbérati, Central African Republic


Your new role

The Berbérati region has been considered a safe zone within the Central African Republic since the end of 2014. However, the return of predominantly Muslim refugees from Cameroon, who sought refuge there during the unrest between 2010 and 2014, holds potential for conflict. Conflicts arise from a general hatred toward people of the Muslim faith as well as the returnees' claims of ownership of their former businesses, farms or other possessions. The aim is to deepen the existing dialogue approaches and to strengthen cooperation between the cross-border dioceses of Bertoua (Cameroon) and Berbérati in resolving these conflicts.

The Commission Diocésaine Justice et Paix (CDJP) Berbérati needs support in strengthening cooperation with the national Commission Justice et Paix (CEJP) and the regional representation of the Central African Interfaith Dialogue Forum.Cautiousness and prudence are required to support those responsible in building sustainable relationships and structures.

Specifically, you will carry out the following tasks:

  • You will organise measures for the training and further education of employees in conflict-sensitive project management as well as planning, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Together with the diocesan Justitia-et-Pax Commission, you will establish peace structures at parish level.
  • You will advise the diocesan Justitia-et-Pax Commission on the establishment of viable dialogue forums and on networking.
  • You will provide advice on the development of strategies for generating personal income.
  • You will ensure the proper disbursement and administration of funds on site in accordance with the donor guidelines and AGEH specifications. You will work in partnership with the partner organisation in this regard.

Your profile

  • You have completed a relevant university degree and have initial work experience, ideally gained outside Europe.
  • In addition, you should have advanced skills in the areas of human rights work, refugee work, civil conflict management and mediation.
  • Ideally, you are familiar with the requirements of successful project management and have mastered organizational development tools.
  • You possess business fluency in French and at least a good command of English.
  • You have diplomatic skills enabling you to deal with the relevant stakeholders in a manner based on mutual partnership, and you can act appropriately in a church context.
